Dear Balobaki Check Partners,
We take pride in acting as guardians of the integrity of information in the public arena in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and in the wider French-speaking world. We do this despite a context in the DRC that is hardly conducive to press freedom.
As we come to the end of the year, and as we look back on our achievements over the last 12 months, we realize that our team has accomplished a great deal for the community, including:
- Producing some one hundred pieces of content – in video, audio, text and infographics – to combat inter-ethnic hate speech as well as false information, mainly about the Mpox virus, the DRC being the worst affected country in Africa.
- Reaching hundreds of thousands of people through our digital platforms and the community radio stations that translate our work into the DRC’s four national languages, as privileged partners of Balobaki Check.
- Publishing more than 150 fact-checking productions on our website, as well as on our digital platforms such as SoundCloud, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook.
Everything we’ve achieved so far is thanks to your ongoing support. It would be impossible to do our job without constantly seeking new technical and financial resources.
I’m writing to you today to find out if you’re ready to take the next step and support Balobaki Check in our fact-checking work. To reach our goal of $40,000, the amount needed to produce our content in 2025, we still need to raise $25,000.

As you know, we’re not in the business of public relations for political figures. On the contrary, we verify information independently. Help us maintain our commitment to our democracy in the new year 2025. Can we count on you?
Last year, our work received international recognition, winning the prize for the most innovative media in the French-speaking world.
We have also benefited from the support of the Poynter Institute, which has helped us with our editorial development and the purchase of equipment.
With a grant from the Canadian Embassy in the DRC, we launched the ‘Tosangana’ (Let’s unite) project. So far, this project has already reached nearly a million people through digital campaigns to counter the spread of hate speech in a post-election context.
It’s pretty scary living in an age of misinformation, disinformation, manipulation and hate speech. Obviously, we need to do more fact-checking, but beyond that we also need to strengthen our commitment to media literacy to help our communities become more resilient in the face of misinformation.

Balobaki Check was founded in 2022 as a not-for-profit organisation that provides training, information and promotes media literacy to support access to quality information in our communities. The members of our association enable us, through their membership fees, to continue our non-profit and non-partisan work. If you have any questions or would like us to check the facts, please send us a message to balobakicheck@gmail.com
Wishing you a Happy New Year for 2025
Ange Kasongo, founder and managing editor of Balobaki Check.
